French artist Jean-Pierre Guill\u00e9ron<\/strong> has been working in the graphic arts for more than thirty years. Guill\u00e9ron is a renowned creator of seascapes and a calligrapher of Eastern ideograms, whose work has been profoundly influenced by such masters as Marin-Marie, Albert Brenet, and Mathurin M\u00e9heut. Jean-Pierre Guill\u00e9ron has refined the Japanese art of fish printing known as Gyotaku.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese art form. The word Gyotaku combines two separate words: Gyo, meaning \u201cfish,\u201d and Taku, meaning \u201cimpression.\u201d These are artistic impressions of fish made on paper. In Japan, the Gyotaku method was used by fishermen to record the size and species of the fish they caught. The Emperor of Japan kept meticulous records of catches and ordered fish impressions to be made for this purpose. Over time, Gyotaku came to be used not as a method of record-keeping, but as an art form. Artists began to enhance the impressions by adding colour and skilfully arranging the composition. The materials needed to create Gyotaku are fish, paper, ink or paint, and brushes. The impressions were made using non-toxic ink composed of soot and animal glue. Once an impression had been made, the fish was washed, cooked, and eaten.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jean-Pierre Guill\u00e9ron\u2019s Gyotaku works can be seen in Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse\u2019s restaurants in Paris and Hong Kong. The artist is represented by galleries in Rouen, Nantes, Le Croisic, Vannes, Concarneau, Paimpol, and Saint-Malo.
