Gallery Kvartira S and the Varshavskie Bani complex present a solo exhibition of works by Asya Lucky.
The new series by contemporary artist Asya Lucky offers an ironic reflection on our relationships with ourselves, with other people, and with animals. In Asya’s scenes, one may discern romantic metaphors, psychoanalytic allusions, homages to Surrealism and Pop Art, and an exploration of memes—or simply enjoy the fun. The artist pokes fun at beauty and emotions, yet rather than creating “photographs” of reality, she “captures” impressions—the kinds of moments that people in high spirits and happy pet owners usually photograph and share on social media.
“The works of Asya Lucky captivate with their lightness and sincerity. In her portraits of people and animals, rendered in a distinctive manner, viewers may recognize themselves or, conversely, try on different roles and encounter the part of their personality that exists within but remains hidden from the outside world. Even the most insignificant and fleeting moment becomes a meaningful ‘keepsake photograph,’” says Olesya Sudzhan, director of Gallery Kvartira S.
“I want my works to evoke a sense of lightness, humor, and freedom in the viewer. I play with the colors of the world around me, and although the objects are depicted in realistic proportions, their natural colors are unimportant to me. The aim of this game is to convey my attitude toward life as a playground where I emphasize spontaneity and positivity. I enjoy being mischievous and playful in my work through color and a certain illogical quality in my chromatic choices, sometimes incorporating elements from paintings by Pablo Picasso. Through my art, I share my worldview with the viewer and lift their spirits,” says artist Asya Lucky.
Contemporary artist Asya Lucky was born in Leningrad. In 2009 she graduated from the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design, specializing in Design. From 2009 to 2018 she worked as an artist-restorer of monumental oil painting under the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. She is a certified artist-restorer of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. Since 2018 she has been working on painting and sculpture in her Moscow studio.
