Following the Open Call held in the spring and summer of 2021, Kvartira S Gallery, together with the ARTPLAY Design Center, opens the group exhibition “Inner and Outer”.
The outer and the inner characterize two categories of materialist dialectics that reflect two sides of one and the same object or phenomenon.
The outer is a necessary condition for the development and existence of a given phenomenon or object. Nature is the most essential outer element of human existence. The category of “the inner” considers all inward aspects of activity, the properties and characteristics inherent in the subject under study.
Sasha Richard: “The outer is always bound to the inner, and vice versa. The outer expresses the properties of an object as a whole and the ways it interacts with its surrounding environment, while the inner is the constitution of the object itself, its composition, structure, and the connections among its elements. The outer can be registered directly by the senses, whereas the inner, as a rule, is hidden from observation and can be revealed through theoretical inquiry. In the history of knowledge, the outer was endowed with such properties as becoming, spatiality, empirical existence, and corporeality. The inner was endowed with the properties of authentic being, time, spirituality, and the like. Therefore the passage from the outer to the inner was interpreted as a passage from becoming to being, from space to time, from finitude to eternity.”
Within the open-call, artists were invited to undertake their own artistic inquiry into the inner and the outer; some explored only the inner or only the outer of a given object, phenomenon, or process. We present a vivid exhibition of both experienced and emerging artists.
