On 22 April, together with its partner and friend, the La Farandole Hotel, the Kvartira S Gallery held a masterclass led by Madame Geneviève Canto on recreating the texture of marble on canvas.

A pupil of Salvador Dalí and founder of the Academy of Arts in Bandol, she spent several hours sharing the secrets of her craft. Students from the Academy attended the masterclass. Everyone present could observe how a regular texture-reproduction lesson unfolds and watch a painting come to life.

Geneviève Canto—a guest of honour at the gallery’s international Autumn in Provence project last year—is a world-renowned specialist in rendering the surfaces of materials. In her works, she captures the physical qualities of a variety of textures—wood, stone, and glass—with remarkable skill. A distinctive feature of Geneviève’s compositions is the presence of tiny figures depicted in various everyday situations.

Slava Likhachyov, an artist taking part in the Cinema in Provence project, then gave a quick masterclass of his own in watercolour painting. In a matter of minutes, he depicted the olive trees growing in the hotel patio. As a finishing touch, he added... tiny figures frolicking among the branches, much to the delight of both Geneviève, who received the painting as a gift, and the assembled press.
