“We all come from childhood,” said Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Where does life begin? When does a person realize that they have grown up and are no longer a child? Or perhaps they never cease to be one? How can we understand why a person has become who they are?
Questions of self-determination and the search for one’s origins have preoccupied people throughout history, from the ancient Greek philosophers to the fathers of psychoanalysis. Today, childhood experiences are believed to shape an individual’s character throughout their life. In the past, people believed that a person’s actions and character were dictated by a higher power. Sometimes these patterns can be changed; in other cases, it is virtually impossible. Searching for the foundation of everything is the task of anyone who seeks to understand themselves from within.
“Every day, we act, make decisions, and choose our words, but each of us must decide for ourselves what or who determines these actions. Society, parents, God, intuition—what predetermines our choices? In the exhibition ‘Everything Begins with…’, we plan to present works that offer an answer to the question of what influences our lives and what defines them,” says the exhibition curator, Maria Grafutko.
We welcome submissions of paintings and graphic works, mixed media, sculpture, photography, and installations exploring where our Life begins and how we become who we are.
Applications emailed to opencall@kvartiras.com must include:
- a CV (the artist’s portfolio in any format and a short biography in Word, submitted as separate files);
- high-quality photographs of 1–3 completed works, specifying their dimensions, materials, year of creation, and price;
- a photograph of the artist in JPEG format;
- a description of the proposed works (please explain how each work reflects the exhibition’s stated theme).
We accept painting, graphic art (framed in a thin light-colored or black frame), photography, installations, collages, and large-scale sculptures—from 1 to 3 works per artist. The selection will be made by the curator and the gallery team. All works in the exhibition will be available for purchase.
Please note! Participation requires payment of a membership fee:
