On July 2, 2023, following an open call held in the spring and summer of 2023, the Kvartira S contemporary art gallery and the ARTPLAY Design Center present the exhibition “It All Begins with...”

Ekaterina Erokhina

“We all come from childhood,” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once said. Where does life begin? When does a person realize that they have become an adult and are no longer a child? Or perhaps they have never ceased to be one? How can we understand why a person has become who they are?

Questions of self-determination and the search for one’s origins have preoccupied humanity throughout history, from the ancient Greek philosophers to the fathers of psychoanalysis. It is now believed that childhood experiences shape an individual’s character throughout their life. In the past, people believed that a person’s actions and character were dictated by a higher power. Sometimes these patterns can be changed; in other cases, it is virtually impossible. Seeking the foundation of all things is the task of everyone who wishes to understand themselves from within.

Alena Popova

For the exhibition, we invited artists to present paintings, graphic works, collages, and sculpture exploring where our Life begins and how we become who we are.

“Every day we act, make decisions, and choose our words, but each of us must decide for ourselves what or who determines these actions. Society, our parents, God, intuition—which of them predetermines our choices? In the exhibition ‘It All Begins with...,’ we intend to present works that offer an answer to the question of what shapes and defines our lives,” says exhibition curator Maria Grafutko.
