Breath is a mirror, constantly reflecting our state of mind and emotions: sometimes we cannot draw breath because there simply is not enough air for us in this world, while at other times the incredible beauty around us takes our breath away. Our breathing—the air we inhale and exhale—quickens or slows with the events of our lives, making everything intangible more vividly perceptible: all that is as unpredictable as the Mistral wind, as refined as the taste of wine, and as light and touching as a French melody.
The works of two artists, Anton Totibadze and Sasha Pasternak, presented at the “Fresh Air” exhibition and devoted to a happiness one can breathe in deeply, invite you on a journey through France, from Bordeaux to Provence.
The paintings and graphic works of Anton Totibadze and Sasha Pasternak may be described as touching, unusual, and silent all at once, imbued with mystery and a certain melancholy. The “Fresh Air” exhibition brings together several genres: landscapes, still lifes, and trompe-l'œil. The artists’ world is a frozen frame woven from memories of a journey through France.
Anton Totibadze’s understated still lifes and landscapes are striking in their complexity, associations, allusions, and subtle humour. Rooted in the artist’s own feelings, Anton’s works are remarkably direct and precise, as is his visual style—documenting the everyday life of the contemporary world at a particular moment, with all its mysteries and wonders, its emotions and mischief.
Totibadze comes from a family of artists spanning several generations of masters. Over the course of his professional career, Anton has therefore become closely acquainted with a wide range of genres and styles of painting and has developed an original style of his own, one that has by now become instantly recognisable.
Each of Alexandra Pasternak’s paintings is a carefully selected fragment of reality in which every element occupies its proper place and all the parts exist in perfect harmony. Sunlit colours convey a sense of light, depth, and multiple planes with consummate precision, bringing Alexandra’s works to life despite the almost geometric arrangement of their objects.
This theatrical quality is no coincidence. Alexandra Pasternak trained in theatrical painting and stage design; her vision grew out of this experience, which she incorporates into her art. In Alexandra’s work, this combination of simplicity, geometry, and attention to detail becomes the artist’s means of entering into dialogue with her viewer.
