About the space: A leisure destination for Moscow residents. Spread across three floors, the complex brings together numerous restaurant concepts, cuisines from around the world, farm-fresh produce and, most importantly, a spa with a variety of steam rooms, pools and hot tubs. The complex’s signature feature is an enormous rooftop pool. The walls at Gremm should serve as a decorative element while immersing guests in a world of relaxation, leisure, tranquillity, serenity and positive emotions, allowing them to disconnect from the outside world.

Why did the idea of creating murals arise? The images on the walls should help guests immerse themselves in an atmosphere of leisure, relaxation and pleasure. Open your photo albums—what do you photograph while on holiday? What emotions and scenes do you try to capture? A sunrise, a sunset, unusual food, enormous waves, beautiful vintage cars in Varadero, cocktails in the pool, beautiful people dancing, a colossal statue of Buddha on a mountain. Anything that evokes a sense of leisure, relaxation, happiness and fond memories.

Trigger thoughts that the murals should bring to mind:

"I’m on holiday: relaxation, the sea, leisure, sunshine, vacation, a resort. I saw all of this when I was by the sea."

"The food here is delicious, and everything feels so calm—a true gastronomic pleasure, like my favourite restaurant in the city."

"Some brilliant professionals have worked on this place. Everything here seems slightly strange to me, yet incredibly stylish. I simply don’t know much about art, but they clearly do."

What could be depicted:

1. Water, fish, octopuses, whales, birds, parachutes, paints, crabs, turtles, flamingos and exotic animals

2. Cocktails, enormous fruit, an enormous sun, stars, leaves, water droplets, circles, the world, the globe and elements of different world cultures

3. Small narrative scenes: people diving, people strolling, crowds of people in a pool.

4. An imitation of a photographic panel—large droplets, feathers, splashes, etc.

Possible artistic styles: Surrealism, optimistic surrealism, hyperrealism, retrofuturism, psychedelia, abstraction, expressionism, poster-style illustration and fantasy.

Technique:

  • It is important not to include too many small details; the murals should not evoke the Impressionist era. Clean paints and colours—the simpler, the better.
  • Remember that the image will be applied using spray paint.
  • For a large-scale panel, we envision an execution resembling watercolour—airy, weightless, perhaps slightly blurred or hazy. Where simple elements will appear
  • Crisp lines and a stencil effect.
  • You might depict one large, simple element surrounded by many smaller ones, while maintaining a unified field of colour.
  • We are drawn to an extremely subtle retro aesthetic, or merely a suggestion of one.
  • Black-and-white techniques are permitted and encouraged.

Our thoughts on the subject:

The mural should complement the space, highlighting its unconventional and distinctive character by creating unique images that may not exist in real life. Yet it should remain accessible to everyone, optimistic and appropriate to the space’s purpose. We would like the images to inspire people to dream and use their imagination. Irony and self-irony are welcome.
