Curator —Daria Kapustina, art historian, art manager, and organiser of international exhibition projects.
An initial impression of an artwork does not always coincide with the artist’s true creative statement. On closer inspection, details often emerge that deliberately seek to deceive the eye, creating unexpected visual forms, combinations, and meanings. Artists have sought to surprise and disconcert viewers since the very dawn of art. They have experimented with different types of perspective, blended genres, manipulated the perception of space, broken the “fourth wall,” and created a convincing illusion of three-dimensional space within a flat picture plane.
“In Kvartira S’s new group project, we propose bringing together unexpected variations of materials and meanings, images, interpretations, and techniques in order to uncover the tricks and illusions of the contemporary artistic process. The exhibition will explore how art can mislead viewers by distorting habitual modes of perception. Through art, we invite visitors to reconsider their understanding of the boundaries of reality and to see the world from a new perspective,” says exhibition curator Daria Kapustina.
Artists are invited to apply whose creative practice is rooted in working with optical effects and phenomena, who create unexpected, paradoxical compositional combinations, and who open the door to their distinctive visual worlds.
Illusion, imitation, substitution, exaggeration, superimposition, intersection, deformation, and other artistic devices are envisioned as the principal protagonists of this project.
Applications submitted to opencall@kvartiras.com must include:
- a CV (the artist’s portfolio in any format and a brief biography in Word, submitted as separate files);
- high-quality photographs of 1–3 completed works, specifying their dimensions, materials, year of creation, and price;
- a photograph of the artist in JPEG format;
- a description of the proposed works (please explain how each work reflects the exhibition’s stated theme).
We accept painting, graphic art (framed in a slim light-colored or black frame), photography, installations, collages, large-scale sculptures, and mixed media—between 1 and 3 works per artist. The selection will be made by the curator and the gallery team. All works in the exhibition will be available for purchase.
Please note! Participation requires a membership fee:
6,000 rubles for gallery residents and 10,000 rubles for new participants.
The membership fee covers installation services, the printing of promotional materials, PR, announcements in the media and on social networks, the opening reception, and guided exhibition tours. The fee is payable after the works have been selected and the exhibition participation agreement has been signed. The fee is fixed and does not depend on the number of works included.
An agreement is concluded with each participant.
