CATALOGUE OF WORKS
Anita Romanova’s solo exhibition unfolds as an intimate narrative centred on memories of the late 1980s and the 1990s—the period of the artist’s childhood and adolescence—as well as personal and historical memory, the sensation of time, and the perception of reality. The artist draws on iconic scenes from childhood and observes how different people’s memories preserve the same images. Taking her own recollections as a starting point, Anita Romanova recreates them on canvas through a wealth of symbols, reflecting on how a single, seemingly insignificant object or moment can transport us back into the past—to that turbulent era of change—and awaken new emotions.
Anita Romanova’s works resemble photographs from the past, in which narrative threads, colour palette, and composition heighten the warmth of personal experience and the perception of reality.
“I was born in the USSR, hence the theme of my exhibition. Millennials are an amazing generation! We grew up watching Devchata, danced to the Backstreet Boys, cried over Titanic, and now we readily adapt to our own children and their ‘crushes, imbas, and cringe.’ Every era has its own problems and crises. Of course, the 1980s and 1990s had them too... But now we remember it all with a smile. No electronics or gadgets, playing ‘Cossacks and Robbers’ around the garages, skipping ropes and hopscotch, one or two soft toys cuddled until they wore through... In a word, nostalgia. That is what this exhibition is about,” says Anita Romanova.
