We invite you to the solo exhibition of Olga Matveeva, “Rasskazy bez slov.”
The artist does not seek to celebrate the beauty of nature or a particular moment; her principal aim is to reveal a narrative that seems to have been created by the viewer’s own imagination: a story that has happened to each of us. Or one that is about to happen.

At some point in my life, I felt the need to create. I began by writing short stories, then novels. And in every book, an artist invariably appeared among my characters. As I created these characters and described their paintings, it occurred to me that it was rather foolish to paint pictures with words when I could do so properly, with brushes and paints: after all, in my now almost forgotten childhood, I had known how to paint, and drawing had been my favourite pastime. That is how it all began. And then I discovered that paintings could be described in words, just as stories could be written in paint. Not in the manner of genre or critical realism, but obliquely, through colour or, conversely, monochrome, and through details. It turned out that even a simple landscape, whether urban or maritime, can speak if you secretly entrust it with your own story, feelings and memories of places, events and people; ultimately, however, it will speak in the viewer’s language, because everyone will be able to see in it something of their own, something that resonates with them alone.
Olga Matveeva is an artist and writer. She graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Chuvash State University. She worked as a journalist, television and radio presenter, screenwriter and director of television projects. She began painting seven years ago. She has held several solo exhibitions.
