Following the exhibition “Old and New,” a competition will be held and three artists will be selected to become residents of Gallery Kvartira S and take part in an exhibition over the course of the year.

Kvartira S Gallery announces an Open Call for participation in the group exhibition “Old and New”. The exhibition will explore the phenomenon of apprenticeship in the broadest sense of the word. In the art world, the role of apprentice is generally assumed by an emerging artist, while the role of teacher may belong to a wide range of people—or even phenomena.

We welcome works that engage with the phenomenon of apprenticeship in any form. This may be the influence of your teacher or an artists’ studio; the influence of the Old Masters and a reimagining of their experience and practice; or the discernible influence of reflections on the past year or earlier events in your life.

“It is impossible to build anything new without relying on the old, which is why it is important for us not to throw the classics overboard from the ‘steamship of modernity,’ but, on the contrary, to draw as fully as possible on past experience; otherwise, we will regress and have to reinvent the wheel,” says the exhibition curator, Maria Grafutko.

We expect your works to answer the question: how do you draw on your own past experience or that of previous generations and your teachers?

Your application must include:

  • a CV (an artist’s portfolio in any format and a brief biography in Word, submitted as separate files);
  • high-quality photographs of 1–3 completed works, indicating their dimensions, materials, year of creation, and price;
  • a photograph of the artist in JPEG format;
  • a description of the proposed works (please explain who or what acted as a teacher, how they did so, and how this is reflected in the work).

We accept painting, graphic art (presented in a thin light-coloured or black frame), photography, installations, collages, and large-scale sculptures—from 1 to 3 works per artist. The selection will be made by the curator and the gallery team. All works in the exhibition will be available for purchase.

Please note! Participation requires a membership fee:

RUB 6,000 for gallery residents and RUB 10,000 for new participants.

The membership fee covers installation services, the printing of promotional materials, PR, announcements in the media and on social networks, the opening event, and guided exhibition tours. The fee is payable after the works have been selected and the exhibition participation agreement has been signed.

An agreement will be concluded with each participant.
