Oleg Petrovich Grigorash is an artist of euphoria and a sculptor of color. His works are distinguished by an individual style, distinctive technique, and unexpected color solutions. Oleg Grigorash’s creative journey has taken him from drawings on linoleum to solo exhibitions, and today his paintings are held in private collections in Russia and abroad.
An incident during his military service in the GDR had a profound influence on the artist’s work. One day, his commanding officer secretly took the soldier off base, dressed him in civilian clothes, and drove him to the Dresden Gallery. The artist’s dream of seeing the Old Masters thus came true, shaping the course of his subsequent work.
Oleg Grigorash absorbed the methods of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, yet employs them in a highly distinctive manner. The character of his works varied throughout the different stages of his career, yet certain shared principles always stand out: sweeping strokes, dense compositions, soft forms, richly textured surfaces, and distinctive color solutions.
The artist has always been drawn more to color than to graphic art, and he rarely works with a brush, preferring a palette knife and the paint tube itself. “When you paint with a palette knife, a sponge, or straight from the tube while listening to music, a feeling of euphoria inevitably arises,” the artist says.
In Oleg Grigorash’s works, color unquestionably takes precedence over form and objects, and even over the paintings’ subjects themselves. Human figures and objects on the artist’s canvases are simplified and rendered primitive, while the paintings remain realistic. In this way, he deliberately and consistently creates a distinctive aesthetic, infusing his works with an inner energetic glow and filling the viewer with a sense of gentle euphoria.
