From April 26 to May 6, the Russian–French project “Man and Space: Art, Science, Culture” took place in Sanary-sur-Mer (France). The project is aimed at expanding and strengthening international cultural and scientific ties between Russia and France.

The theme of the project was chosen for a reason. In 2016, Russia and France marked 50 years of cooperation in the space sphere: France became the first country in the world with which the Soviet Union signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes. Today it is hard to imagine Russia’s international cooperation in space without France. This includes joint research on the ISS, launches of Russian Soyuz rockets from the European spaceport at Kourou, full-scale long-term programs of interplanetary research such as the ExoMars project, and joint participation in space missions: in 2017, Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy and French astronaut of the European Space Agency (ESA) Thomas Pesquet completed a mission aboard the International Space Station.

The project venue — the Var department — also has a connection to the space theme: in June 1965, the world’s first space traveler, Yuri Gagarin, spent a holiday on the seacoast here with his fellow cosmonauts Vladimir Komarov, Konstantin Feoktistov, and Boris Yegorov.

The project brought together cosmonauts, scientists, researchers, figures of art and culture, media personalities, government representatives, and members of the press from Russia, France, and Belgium. The project explored the theme of space from various perspectives: in painting, photography, cinema, science, and education.

Pierre Kuntz
He has been painting for more than 50 years. He developed an interest in art history, the Impressionists, and the Expressionists. While living in Africa, he explored the juxtaposition of colors, shadows, and reflections. He worked with a painting technique based on color and sand. While traveling through Asia, New Caledonia, and the Caribbean, Pierre became fascinated by astronomy—and since then, outer space has remained a recurring theme in his art.

He has participated in French art fairs including Art Shopping, the Contemporary Art Market, and Artistes Indépendants.
In 2014 and 2015, he was awarded a gold medal by the National Federation of French Culture.

From April 26 to May 6, Pierre Kuntz’s paintings on the theme of "Journey into Space" will be presented at Hostellerie La Farandole and LA MÉDIATHÈQUE MUNICIPALE DE SANARY-SUR-MER.

Pierre Kuntz has been painting for 54 years, having begun at the age of 15. After studying art history, he developed a passion for the Impressionists and Expressionists. During his years in sub-Saharan Africa, he researched the juxtaposition of primary colors, shadows, and reflections, so vividly present in the luminous landscapes of Gabon and Côte d’Ivoire. With the generous guidance of the Breton painter and potter Gustave Tifoche, he deepened his understanding of a painting technique based on color and sand. A native of Marseille who often travels in Asia, New Caledonia, and the Caribbean, and an astronomy enthusiast, he has organized his work around four themes: Sea and Water, Energy and Spirituality, Marseille and Its Region, Nebulae.

Sasha Pasternak
She has been drawing since childhood and attended various art studios. In 2011, she graduated with honors from the Moscow State Academic Art School in Memory of 1905, where she studied theater design. From 2011 to 2016, she studied in the scenography department at RUTI-GITIS. She worked as a theater designer in the Bolshoi Theatre’s production workshops. Since 2014, she has taught art to children at London Gates Education Group. She has participated in group exhibitions and held several solo exhibitions: «Deciduous, Coniferous» (2015), «Spring Is Coming» (2017). She paints in oils and has an extensive knowledge of houseplants, which she loves to depict.
From April 26 to May 6, Sasha Pasternak’s paintings on the theme of "Journey into Space" will be presented at Hostellerie La Farandole and LA MÉDIATHÈQUE MUNICIPALE DE SANARY-SUR-MER.

Sasha Pasternak. Born in Moscow in 1991. She began drawing in childhood and attended various art classes, including those held at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. In 2007, after finishing school, she was admitted to the theater design department of MGAHU (Moscow State Academic Art School). She spent three months working as a scenographer in the Bolshoi Theatre’s production workshops.
In 2011, she graduated from the school with honors. She took part in several exhibitions of young artists devoted to theater art, including «Your Chance» (2009) and «KLIN» (2010, 2011, and 2013). Marie Jo Parron
A self-taught artist who since 2002 has been exploring themes of stars and space in her paintings. The subjects of Marie Jo’s works correspond to scientific reality — the artist even labels the chemical composition of nebulae.
From 1996 to 2009 Marie Jo was a member of the National Federation of French Culture. Participant and laureate of numerous exhibitions and art fairs: Salon Art Shopping Carrousel du Louvre (2008-2011); Grand Palais Salon Art in Capital (2007-2010); exhibitions at Dreem Street Gallery, Le Lavandou (2013-2014). Participant in art events Artoulous' Expo, Mag Montreux, Cannes Croisete, Paris Carrousel du Louvre.
Marie Jo Parron. Self-taught painter born in 1952, Marie Jo felt from adolescence the call of painting, which would open a long path for her. Emotion and freshness would illuminate her gouache portraits of children, then from 1991 she created numerous oil paintings on the theme of faces of the world imbued with sun and generous nature. Living in a mountain setting, nature asserted itself in her work with landscapes where flowers offer themselves in brilliant colors before the setting of the mountains.
From 2002, the discovery of astronomy would transform her work. Stars and nebulae would guide her toward physics, chemistry, and the movements of the planets through works of scientific popularization.
She continues this creative path where she discovers an immensity between serenity and wonder.

« Valérian et la Cité des mille planètes » by Patrice Garcia
Painter, screenwriter, and comic-book artist who has worked with Luc Besson; designer of advertisements and music videos. Creator of fantastic characters as well as spaceships for the films "Arthur et le Minimoys", "Le Cinquième élément", " Valérian et la Cité des mille planètes ".

In June 2018 the international project of the Man and Space gallery continued: the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Marseille, in partnership with the Kvartira S gallery, unveiled a memorial plaque to Yuri Gagarin on the island of Bendor in the south of France.

In 1965, after his flight, Gagarin spent a short holiday on Bendor at the invitation of the island’s owner, Paul Ricard’s company. This little-known historical fact once again became a vivid testament to friendship among nations.

The plaque was designed by the gallery’s curator, artist Alexander Rygorchuk; the idea was brought to life by metalwork artist Nikolay Tabachkov.

Director of the Kvartira S gallery Olesya Sudzhan, head of the Moscow Department of Foreign Economic and Trade Relations Sergey Cheremin, and Consul General of the Russian Federation in Marseille Sergey Molchanov.

Artist and designer Alexander Rygorchuk also designed the label for a unique batch of wine, “Youri Gagarine,” released in memory of the occasion.
The Girls’ Cadet Corps of Moscow took part in the event.
