Following the Open Call held in the spring and summer of 2022, the Kvartira S gallery opens a group exhibition of works by contemporary artists, “Nobody Does It That Way!”.

Whatever an artist may do, there will invariably be someone who says, “Nobody does it that way!”, and the continuation of the phrase will come in an affirmative-imperative tone — it should be more realistic, more abstract, more conceptual, simpler, cheaper, more expensive... and this list is endless.

To whom, and since when, did the artist suddenly become indebted? In reply one may hear still deeper wisdoms: “because that’s how it’s done,” “because that’s better.” Among the advisors, those whose opinion is worth heeding are rare. If you are doing what your heart tells you, then do it for yourself.

“Well, and if they tell you: «Nobody does it that way!» — answer: «And I am Somebody!»”. Marina Tsvetaeva.

HATCH EXPERIMENT 1973 D 60 cm, canvas, oil, 2020 Artist: Inna Volvak

As part of the Open Call we held, we invited the authors to present works atypical for them, in the creation of which the artists were guided by a logic of their own and found distinctive solutions to their artistic tasks.

“The phrase “Nobody does it that way!” usually evokes in the interlocutor a paralyzing fear and stupor. Yet in the creative milieu everyone strives to do what no one before them has yet done. Artists reject generally accepted rules and seek their own path and form a language of self-expression. We have assembled a vivid, bold exhibition of young artists who are trying to hear their own voice and are not afraid to show their individuality. And I wish each of them, sooner or later, to hear the sacred words “Nobody does it that way!”, for to an artist it always means not criticism, but recognition”, — curator of the exhibition Sasha Richard.
