Kvartira S Gallery, in collaboration with the ARTPLAY Design Center, presents Two Times Two, a solo exhibition by Moscow artist Viktoria Nesen. The exhibition brings together works in various styles and techniques, as well as the artist’s creative experiments from 2017 to 2021.
The exhibition explores the possibilities open to an artist working without being bound to a single style or technique. Almost every artist dreads hearing the words, “You have no style of your own”—a statement that sounds like a verdict to many. Artists strive to find their distinctive voice, only to become hostages to the style and technique they have developed.
Through her works, Viktoria addresses a challenge faced by herself and other artists: the fear of venturing beyond a familiar, comfortable technique in which one feels confident; the possibility of “losing oneself” and one’s audience by dissolving into a succession of new artistic solutions, which the creative soul invariably demands.
“My paintings do not teach anything; you will find no hidden meaning here. My works offer an opportunity to turn to your own reflections on the search for color, the dynamics of drawing, and the words written on the canvas,” says Viktoria Nesen.
“Viktoria deliberately refuses to impose limits on herself, experimenting with color and introducing graphic art and typography into her painting. Subject matter is secondary to her. Viktoria’s works reveal the strong influence of poetry and literature, giving rise to a certain oratorical quality and sense of exhortation,” says Sasha Rishar.
