Getting to Know the Artist
Alexandra Yanchenko
A graduate of Irkutsk National Research Technical University with a degree in Monumental Art, a scholarship recipient of the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg, Austria, and a young, vibrant, highly promising artist, Alexandra Yanchenko tells Kvartira S Gallery about herself, her interests, and her work.

I enjoy the tactile contact with materials and paint as I work, as well as the fact that the process ultimately yields a tangible result.
I am inspired by the people I meet and by the very process of connecting with them. I am also inspired by the places I have been fortunate enough to visit and the cities where I once lived or live now. Reality itself provides compelling subjects that are refracted through artistic practice.
I am interested in a variety of media and practices. I believe that the form of an artwork depends on its content, on the idea the artist wishes to express at that particular moment. This is why my portfolio includes video projects, performances, and relational forms.

My studio was located in a loft for a while. It is wonderful to have a workspace separate from your home and living environment. It instils discipline and takes your practice to another professional level. Nevertheless, working conditions alone do not guarantee success. It is important to remain constantly immersed in the process and creatively engaged. This includes working directly on a project or painting, corresponding with galleries, talking to colleagues, and simply reflecting on ideas.
My tools are acrylic paints—we are well matched in temperament and pace. I like that they are odourless and dry quickly, allowing me to achieve vivid colours and an even layer of paint.

If I were not an artist, we would not be having this conversation now.
