“The Soul of Dance” is Stuart Lawson’s exploration of classical ballet and traditional dance through the prism of movement, light and time.

For many years, Stuart Lawson has worked with dancers, photographing them both backstage and in the studio. His interest extends beyond the visual aspect of dance to the complex unity of technical mastery, discipline, beauty and emotional expression that lies at its heart. Using long exposures, carefully controlled lighting and movement captured at the precise moment of the photograph, Lawson creates images in which a sequence of gestures unfolds within a single visual field. The dancer’s body becomes an imprint of its own movement — a space where strength meets fragility, precision meets freedom, and control meets complete surrender. The artist seeks to convey not only the visible form of movement, but also its inner energy and emotional impact.

From the refined precision of classical ballet to the fluidity and rich visual imagery of Uzbek dance, from its flowing expressiveness to the swift and powerful dynamics of Georgian choreographic tradition, the works presented reveal a diversity of cultural forms united by the exceptional physical and expressive potential of the human body.

At the heart of the project is the principle of authenticity in the photographic process. Each image is created at the moment of capture and formed within the camera itself. Post-processing is kept to a minimum, and artificial intelligence technologies are used neither to create nor to transform movement. Everything the viewer sees emerges from the interaction between the dancer, light, movement and the precision of the photographic gesture.

“The Soul of Dance” invites the viewer to move beyond the captured instant and to see dance as a living art form, in which technique becomes beauty, movement acquires emotional depth, and photography does not construct reality but preserves its unique and unrepeatable manifestation.

About the Artist
Stuart Lawson is a British photographer living and working in Hyères, France. He has spent a significant part of his professional career in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Russia. This experience has shaped his enduring interest in the human figure, movement and identity.
In Russia, Lawson worked for eight years with dancers from the Bolshoi Theatre and other leading Russian ballet companies, photographing them both backstage and in the studio. It was during this period that the visual language of the Dancer’s Soul series took shape, with movement, light and long exposure becoming means of exploring not only the physical precision of dance, but also its emotional energy.
Following his move to France in 2022, Lawson’s artistic interests expanded from classical ballet to traditional dance, music, portraiture and sport. In Uzbekistan, he turns to the colour and movement of traditional folk dances, transforming them into images of light and energy. Despite the diversity of his subjects, the human figure and the transformation that emerges through movement remain at the centre of his photographic practice.
Stuart Lawson’s work has been presented at international exhibitions and festivals in London, Moscow, Dubai, Arles, Fréjus, Frankfurt, Alassio, Monaco, Tashkent, Guangzhou and Kyoto. His projects include Dancer’s Soul, Metamorphosis, Body of Light, Hospital Portraits, Faces of Hyères — Uzbek Colours and Backstage. His work has also been featured in the Festival du Surréalisme, the Fotozofio photography festival, the Elgar Festival, the Tashkent Biennale and the Across the River project. In 2026, his work was selected for the Digitalism exhibition at Saatchi Gallery in London.
