Following the Open Call held in autumn 2024, Kvartira S Gallery, in collaboration with the ARTPLAY Design Center, presents the exhibition “The Illusion of Deception.”

Our initial impression of an artwork does not always correspond to what the artist is truly seeking to express. On closer inspection, details often emerge that deliberately seek to deceive the eye, creating unexpected, paradoxical combinations and meanings. Artists have sought to surprise and disconcert viewers since the earliest days of art. They experimented with different types of perspective, blended genres, manipulated the perception of space, broke the “fourth wall,” and made viewers believe in the presence of three-dimensional space within the flat surface of a painting.

For Kvartira S’s new project, contemporary artists were invited to use familiar optical illusions and their own imaginative visions to confound the viewer’s gaze and challenge our habitual perception of reality. You will encounter a wide range of interpretations of the theme, unexpected combinations of materials and techniques, experiments with imitation, substitution, distortion, and exaggeration, as well as the participants’ distinctive visual worlds.

Exhibition curator Daria Kapustina: “By employing various artistic devices and trompe-l’œil effects, artists can blur the boundary between the real and the imagined, revealing new meanings, forms, and compositional relationships. Will we be able to recognize and decipher these deceptions? Can art enable us to see the world from a new perspective and reconsider our understanding of the boundaries of reality?”
