The artist Charles Chantemesse invites visitors to explore two of his favourite subjects: women and flowers. Women’s faces and bodies, flowers both real and imagined—in these images, the artist masterfully combines light and shadow, playfulness and sensuality. Through visual metaphors, he tells us of women’s desires, fantasies, illusions, and torments... This parallel between women’s bodies and flowers is a poetic ode to femininity.

Charles Chantemesse studied at the Toulon School of Fine Arts in the mid-1950s and was actively involved in exhibitions during the 1960s. Charles then devoted his life to architecture, working for architectural practices, yet he never laid down his pencil or brushes. In 1994, the artist returned to his first love: painting. Since then, he has exhibited not only within the region but also abroad. His works are held in collections around the world.

Charles Chantemesse is fascinated by Pop Art, while also working within the tradition of Narrative Figuration and drawing inspiration from the most prosaic aspects of reality: consumer society, current events, advertising, and magazine photography. His works represent a true fusion of art and everyday life. Working with narrative imagery, he employs vivid colours and a wide range of techniques, from acrylic and oil painting to collage and mixed media.

At Hostellerie La Farandole, from 12 July to 30 September 2024, the artist Charles Chantemesse will present an exhibition entitled “THE SECRET OF WOMAN”.

Charles Chantemesse offers visitors a beautiful visual and artistic gift, one that is certain to move them as they discover his two favourite subjects: women and flowers.

Women’s faces and bodies, flowers both real and imagined—the artist masterfully brings together light and shadow, sensitivity and sensuality. His sparkling eye allows him to observe women with an almost obsessive fascination, painting their desires, fantasies, illusions, and torments... This parallel between women’s bodies and flowers is a poetic ode to femininity.

Trained at the Toulon School of Fine Arts in the mid-1950s, within the enduring tradition of the Provençal school of painting, Charles Chantemesse exhibited his work into the 1960s. He worked for architectural practices and never laid down his pencil or brushes. Yet it was not until 1994 that he returned to his first love: painting. From then on, he embarked on a succession of exhibitions both within the region and abroad.

An artist poised between worlds, Charles Chantemesse looks towards Pop Art while remaining firmly rooted in the Narrative Figuration movement, drawing inspiration from the most prosaic aspects of reality—consumer society, news stories, advertising, magazine photographs...—and creating a genuine fusion between art and everyday life. From Narrative Figuration, he retains the intensity of colour while also embracing its techniques, moving from acrylic to oil painting, collage, and found materials, with equal mastery of the smoothest fields of colour and richly textured impasto.
