Moscow contemporary art gallery Kvartira S presents the VII Russian–French artistic project «Five Senses».

The artist marvels at the world around us, at the realm of things familiar to everyday life, clearly showing that even a small object can hold a vast and fascinating existence. The artist engages all our senses: we see, hear, and touch, and vividly imagine taste and scent. Responding to the artist’s call, we may feel ourselves at one moment Gulliver in a macroworld, at another a tiny caterpillar living inside an apple from a Caravaggio still life. Thus from the five senses true art is born — art for people of independent mind who value the highest quality, uniqueness, and the fullness of life in every sense.
Russian artists Sergey Gerasimov and Konstantin Lupanov, who have repeatedly presented their work at the Russian Museum (Saint Petersburg) and the Grand Palais (Paris), will show in Sanary-sur-Mer magnificent paintings in the technique of «macrorealism». During their creative journey through Provence the masters will also create new works on the theme of «Five Senses». The culmination of the two-week plein-air sessions will traditionally be a ceremonial vernissage at La Farandole, where the full series of works by the Russian artists will be presented, as well as works by the guest of honour – renowned French photographer José Nicolas, recipient of the Award for Humanitarian Activity and the Marc Flamant Prize.
The project is supported by the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Marseille.
Participants:
Konstantin Lupanov
Artist. Born in 1977. In 2004, he graduated from the Academy of Art and Industry at Krasnodar State University of Culture and Arts, specializing in monumental painting. He is the author of several solo projects presented in Russia, France, and Italy.
Konstantin describes his art as “cheerful, irresponsible daubing.” In his paintings, the restless plasticity of emphatically expressive painting is paradoxically combined with an ironic tone.
“From early childhood, I displayed a complete lack of any sense of proportion or harmony. I was also prone to constant contemplative idleness. Those around me concluded that I was an artist, and I readily believed them. This gave me—and still gives me—certain privileges and freedoms.”

Sergei Gerasimov
Artist. Born in 1964 in Weimar, Germany. Member of the Russian Association of Restorers. In 1984, he graduated from the Moscow Art School in Memory of 1905. He lived and worked in Italy and Germany for many years. He participated in establishing the first Museum of Contemporary Art in Libreville. In recent years, he has worked in a duo with Yuri Bakrushev under the artistic pseudonym Yuri German. His works are held in private collections in Europe, America, and Africa.

José Nicolas. Guest of Honour.
French photographer. Born in Casablanca, Morocco. He began his career as a photographer for a local newspaper and various humanitarian organizations, such as “Médecins du Monde”. For twelve years, José Nicolas worked with the Sipa Press agency in Paris, covering numerous conflicts, which took him to many parts of the world, including conflict zones in Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Chad, Liberia, Bosnia, and Somalia. In 1983, he was wounded by a sniper’s bullet while patrolling a street in Beirut.
Since 1996, José Nicolas has worked as a freelance photographer for newspapers, magazines, and publishing houses. Over the years, his photographs have been exhibited in various countries and have received numerous international distinctions, including the Humanitarian Award (1987) and the Marc Flament Prize (1994). At various times, works by José Nicolas have been presented at La Contemporaine (Paris), at the Musée de l’Armée (Paris), and at the Museon Arlaten (Arles).
Today, José Nicolas lives in Normandy and devotes himself to more personal work. The beauty of the world attracts him more than its chaos; his thirst for tranquillity has prevailed over his thirst for adventure. The great traveller no longer follows the paths of war. He is setting out along new paths, exploring the mysteries that lead into the realm of human emotion.
“A good photograph is a great deal of luck, a little courage, and a feel for composition.”
